Sweet Potato Dog Bisuits Made from Scratch
Who wouldn't make homemade biscuits for the big baby shown above......but then I'm partial since he is my animal child. All of my dogs have loved sweet potatoes - this recipe is easy and has no preservatives - which makes them healthier for our Canine buddies.
2 cups flour
1/2 cup rolled oats (quick oats can also be used)
1/3 cup sweet potato leftovers (mashed, baked, boiled - whatever)
2/3 cup chicken broth (I have used beef broth or even some bacon grease mixed with water)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon (might need a little more) olive oil
Preheat oven to 425 degrees (F). Stir the dry ingredients (flour, oats and salt) together with a wooden spoon in a large bowl. Now stir in the sweet potato leftovers and the chicken broth (the dough should look like the picture above). If the dough is too dry and you are not able to mix in all of the flour - then add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and stir. Either spray your cookie sheet or spread a little olive oil over the cookie sheet surface with your hand/fingers. Now press down the dough with a spatula or your fingers until the pan is covered. You must cut the dough BEFORE you bake the biscuits - I just cut them into rectangular pieces (see below). If you have a dog biscuit cookie cutter then you may roll out the dough and make "normal" shaped dog biscuits - but the cookie sheet method is much easier.
Bake for 25 minutes and allow to cool before treating your dog.
Variations: I have added leftover turkey chunks (when we become sick of turkey after Thanksgiving). I have also added joint supplement powder that I bought from an Equine supply store (it contained glucosamine chondroitin) and other times I have used brewers yeast which is also healthy for our pups.
YOUR CANINE FRIEND WILL LOVE THEM!!
My dog would LOVE these - thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute dog! Got any recipes for cats?
ReplyDeleteThank You. I wish that I could make homemade treats for my cat but she is so picky - I've tried to give her scraps (chicken, turkey) and she immediately vomits. I've even tried other cat food besides "Iams" - and she will vomit that also. So, I don't have any recipes for cats.
