SECRECY #4 - Secrecy Act, NDA, Secrecy Agreements
Today is part four in the study about "secrecy." There will be many hypothetical situations in our post today because the topic will rely on our individual discernment.
Today we are focusing on Secrecy Agreements and questioning whether these might actually cause us to lie or to deceive others around us.
First I will give some examples:
Secrecy Acts - here in the U.S. there is the "Invention Secrecy Act of 1951" that requires certain invention patents to be kept secret. The reason for this secrecy is because the government has deemed these inventions a threat to economic stability or a national security threat. (notice I underlined government because I could easily see a nefarious reason on the part of the government).
- in the U.K. (United Kingdom), there is the "Official Secrets Act" which protects state secrets. (here again, I could easily see a scenario where the government is protecting their nefarious state secrets).
N.D.A. = non-disclosure agreement (same as below):
Secrecy Agreement - is a contract between two parties that requires certain information, material or knowledge to be kept secret.
The question is
- could any of these types of secrecy agreements cause you to lie to your family and friends?
- Or, could these agreements actually be making you deceive people?
Let's define "deceive"
Deceive - to cause to believe what is not true
It's obvious when we read the Bible verses below:
Not all secrecy agreements are bad. A good example is the HIPAA act which protects medical information and makes sure that personal information remains private (remember in part#2 of this series we learned the difference between private & secret - click HERE to view that post).
Here are a few possible areas where secrecy agreements are bad or where they cause deception:
- maybe you work for a pharmaceutical company and you are not allowed to release certain adverse side effects experienced by some individuals because of that signed agreement. Or maybe these side effects are wrongly described in such a way as not to cause alarm.
- you might work for a seed company that is hiding the truth about detrimental health consequences of eating genetically modified foods but you are not allowed to say anything because of that agreement you signed.
- maybe you worked in Antarctica for six months and saw something that made you realize why the Antarctic Treaty exists - maybe you saw what they are hiding from the public (why would more than 50 countries - many of whom are at war with each other keep this treaty for so many decades???). You are not able to say anything because of that agreement that you signed.
- maybe you are a pilot and you had to sign an NDA that prevents you from telling others something about the true nature of the earth (click HERE to have your mind blown about this point).
I could go on and on but the Bible verse below couldn't be more clear:
Now I am NOT saying that we should break these agreements. Rather, I am saying that we should all pray for discernment and our Heavenly Father will make it clear what needs to be done - we might have to become a "whistleblower" or remove ourselves from that agreement.
Don't lie and don't be deceived.
