SECRECY #3 - Oath, Vow, Promise, Pledge, Swear
Today we continue our study about "secrecy." Initially you might think that our focus today has nothing to do with secrecy but we need to have a detailed understanding of these terms/words for future posts in this series.
Let's define all five featured terms:
Oath - a solemn (usually formal) calling upon God to witness
to the truth of what one says or what one sincerely intends to do
Vow - to promise solemnly or to swear (one by which a person is bound to an act, service or condition)
Promise - to pledge to do, bring about or provide
- a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified
Pledge - a binding promise or agreement to do or forbear
Swear - to utter or take solemnly (an oath)
Many of the above definitions use the word "solemnly" - let's define that word also:
Solemnly - very serious or formal
- done or made with the utmost sincerity
In the Bible verse below we learn the seriousness of taking vows, oaths and pledges. Every detail that we promise MUST be completed (see below).
The Scripture passage from Matthew 5 is quite amazing. I'm sure that you can see where this series is going in future posts. "Let your yes be yes and your no be no." What if you give an oath/pledge to a Secret Society? - that means there will be areas of your life that you will have to lie about in order to keep that oath. What about secret symbolism that you promised to only keep within your group? - that also means that you are lying. Both of these examples means that your yes is not always yes and that your no is not always no - anything more than yes or no is from the devil!
Before you take an oath, make a vow, promise, pledge or swear - make sure that your 'yes' will always mean 'yes' and that your 'no' will always mean 'no'.
