Welcome to the 127th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!
I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.
The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"
Today's featured hymn is "Commit Whatever Grieves Thee" written by Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) & composed by Melchior Teschner (1584-1634). This was originally a German song (I can not find who the translator was). More than 130 of this author's hymns were published. Paul Gerhardt had a difficult life. He lost many family members: 4 of his 5 children died young and then his wife passed away after a prolonged illness. Also, he lived most of his years during the "Thirty Years War" which added to the family tragedies that He suffered.
I have included a video below the lyrics.
Enjoy!
Turn with me to number 368 in your hymnals and let's sing:
Commit Whatever Grieves Thee
written by Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676)
& composed by Melchior Teschner (1584-1635)
1. Commit whatever grieves thee Into the gracious hands Of Him who never leaves thee, Who heav'n and earth commands. Who points the clouds their courses, Whom winds and waves obey, He will direct thy footsteps And find for thee a way.
2. On Him place thy reliance If thou wouldst be secure; His work thou must consider If thine is to endure. By anxious sighs and grieving And self-tormenting care God is not moved to giving; All must be gained by prayer.
3. His hand is never shortened, All things must serve His might; His every act is blessing, His path is purest light. His work no man can hinder, His purpose none can stay, Since He, to bless His children , Will always find a way.
4. Then hope, my feeble spirit, And be thou not dismayed; God helps in every trial And makes the unafraid. Await His time with patience, Then shall thine eyes behold The sun of joy and gladness, His love and care unfold.
