My Portion - March 2024 = Chapter 3, Verse 24

A couple years ago I did a series on this blog called: "Today's Date in the Bible" (click HERE to view "Today's Date in the Bible" from two years ago).  Well, I really enjoyed writing that series and felt led to revamp and continue the series.  It's kind of like letting God totally guide us in where we should study - which Bible verse or which area of Scripture.

This is how it will work - we will have the month represent the Chapter in the Bible and the year will represent the verse. Currently, we are in the month of March 2024, so we will focus on verse 24 of the third ChapterIn the previous series, I chose ten different Bible verses that fell into that specification (verse 24 of the second Chapter of any Book in the Bible).  This year I felt led to focus on just one verse that falls into that specification and not only will we study that chosen verse in detail, but we will also study the verses or maybe the entire chapter to show the context and meaning behind the featured verse.

Today's featured verse is:
Lamentations 3:24

Putting it into context:

This book of the Bible was written by Jeremiah.  He warned about the destruction of Jerusalem but ends chapter 3 by encouraging with God's mercy.

In the featured verse above the word "portion" is important.
In the "Blue Letter Bible" we learn that the original Hebrew word used for portion is:
ḥēleq
Which is defined as:
- portion, share
- portion, tract, parcel (of land)
- one's portion, one's possession
- (chosen) portion
- portion (from God)

In other words - God is all that our soul needs!!  His Holy Spirit fills us from head to toe - that is our portion; our slice and that is the hope we need to endure all hardships.

In the Scripture passage below we see that God answered Jeremiah the second that he called on God!  He said "Do not fear".  Remember, in my "FearNot" series on this blog we learned that "Do not be afraid" (or fear not) appears 365 times which is enough for each day of the year.  This means that we should NEVER live in fear!

You have heard my voice:
“Do not hide Your ear
From my sighing, from my cry for help.”
You drew near on the day I called on You,
And said, “Do not fear!”
Lamentations 3:56-57

Jeremiah then details some of the destruction that his people are experiencing at that time.  "Tears stream" from his eyes and "they will not stop." (see below)

"Tears stream from my eyes
because of the destruction of my people!
My tears flow endlessly;
    they will not stop
until the Lord looks down
    from heaven and sees.
My heart is breaking
over the fate of all the women of Jerusalem.
Lamentations 3:48-51 (NLT)

And the constant mockery endured by Jeremiah & his people perpetrated by his evil enemies.  (Actually, the description in the Bible verses below sounds exactly how the world treats Christians today):

"Lord, you have heard the vile names they call me.
You know all about the plans they have made.
My enemies whisper and mutter
as they plot against me all day long.
Look at them! Whether they sit or stand,
I am the object of their mocking songs.
Lamentations 3:61-63 (NLT)

Finally, Jeremiah ends this chapter with God's promise that He will avenge (see Scripture below):

"Pay them back, Lord,
for all the evil they have done.
Give them hard and stubborn hearts,
and then let your curse fall on them!
Chase them down in your anger,
destroying them beneath the Lord’s heavens.
Lamentations 3:64-66 (NLT)

The Lord is our portion!
Just like it says in the New Testament:
"If God is for us, who can be against us?"
(Romans 8:31)
With God as our portion - there is NOTHING to fear!
