Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #85

Welcome to the 85th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "He Giveth More Grace" written by Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932).
I am not familiar with today's featured hymn.  My aunt shared this song with my mom and the lyrics are so comforting in our current worldly situation that I wanted to share it with you.  The author of this hymn had a very tragic life.  Three years after Annie Johnson Flint was born she lost her mom (during childbirth to her younger sister).  Her father was also terminally ill and willed his children to a Baptist family - The Flint family.  Her faith grew and grew.  She decided to train to become a teacher but after a few years of training her arthritis became too severe that she ended up in a wheel chair and had to give up her teaching dream.  To make things even worse, her adoptive parents both died within a month of each other and she and her sister found themselves alone again.  This story has a good ending though, Annie began making hand lettered cards and gift books and a card publisher started to sell her cards and some of her poetry!

"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me."
2 Corinthians 12:9

I have included 2 versions of this lovely hymn (below the lyrics).  The first version is performed by an all male quartet and the second version by an all female duet.  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 000 in your hymnals and let's sing:

He Giveth More Grace
written by Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932)

1. He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase,
To added affliction He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.
 CHORUS

2.   When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half-done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.
 CHORUS

Chorus

His love has no limit, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men,
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth and giveth and giveth again.
