Psalm 119 - PE (Hebrew Alphabet)

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the seventeenth letter
PE.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.

PE - Your Precepts Enlighten me with truth




We begin by defining "precept" and "enlighten":

Precept - a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought.

Enlighten - give (someone) spiritual knowledge or insight, to explain something clearly.

The featured verses that we are studying today show a longing and desire for God's word.  Plus, they show remorse for those who do not follow God.

- Desire for God's wonderful statues (verse 129) results in our obedience to God.

- Desire for enlightenment (verse 130) results in understanding (even for the most simple minded).

- Longing for God's commands (verse 131) results in understanding.

- Longing to love God (verse 132) results in mercy received from God.

- Desire NOT to sin (verse 133) results in God's guidance.

- Longing to learn God's decrees (verse 135) results in God shining down upon us.

- Desire to obey God's precepts (verse 134) results in redemption from God.

Finally, when God's laws are not being obeyed by those around us - streams of tears flow (verse 136) (we feel remorse).




Longing to learn more about our Lord God Almighty everyday will result in a life that glorifies God.
