MEM - Psalm 119: 97-104
The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119. If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses. These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses. It is a chapter full of praise and worship. I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.
I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research. The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language. There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet. Today we continue studying with the thirteenth letter
MEM.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.
MEM - Your proMises are sweeter than honEy to my Mouth.
The eight verses that we are focusing on today are split into two sections:
1. How we should treat God's Law
2. What we should expect in return
How We Should Treat God's Law
We should love God's Law, meditate on it and obey what He commands.
"Oh how I love your law!" (verse 97)
"I meditate on it all day long" (verse 97)
"..for I obey your precepts" (verse 100)
"..so that I might obey your word" (verse 101)
What We Should Expect In Return
By studying, following and enjoying God's Word we will receive wisdom, insight, understanding and safety.
"Your commands.....make me wiser than my enemies" (verse 98)
"I have more insight than all my teachers" (verse 99)
"I have more understanding than the elders" (verse 100)
"I gain understanding from your precepts" (verse 104)
"I have kept my feet from every evil path" (verse 101)
When we meditate on God's Law, love His Word and obey His commands, then we will gain understanding, insight, wisdom and safety!
