Psalm 119 - TETH (Hebrew Alphabet)

TETH - Psalm 119: 65-72

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the ninth letter TETH.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.

TETH - Teach me good judgement, especially when times are hard.

The key word in today's featured verses is: GOOD.

"No one is good - except God alone."
Mark 10:18

"The Lord is good to all;  he has compassion on all he has made."

Psalm 145:9

Good - that which is morally right;  righteousness

Half of these featured verses include the word "good" - let's study this in more detail.

1.  "You are GOOD, and what you do is GOOD" (verse 68)

As we read above, God alone is good and He is good to us!  What more could we desire??

2.   "Do GOOD to your servant according to your word, O Lord." (verse 65)

The use of the phrase "according to your word" is very interesting.  This means that we are not able to rattle off a wish list to God and expect Him to give us everything.  We MUST realize that our requests and our desires must first be approved by God or be in His plan for our life.  "Let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6) BUT, make sure to possibly accept "no" as an answer.

3.   "Teach me knowledge and GOOD judgement," (verse 66)

The definition of judgement - the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.
I'm not very good in times of emergency, I'm just not able to think on my feet.  That's why learning good judgement is essential in making good decisions, especially during difficult times.  Pray that God will give you good judgement.

4.   "It was GOOD for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees" (verse 71)

Have you ever noticed that during hardships your faith becomes deeper?  And that the lessons learned during those difficult times stick with you for a lifetime?  That's why it is good to be afflicted.

"but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
Romans 5:3 & 4

Since God is good and since He is good to us, then let's strive everyday to be good to others!
