100 Years of Christmas Music - 1960's
Music has always been a vital part of my Christmas celebrations, even since I was a child and into my adulthood. During my childhood my family started out with a small radio that my parents placed on the fireplace mantel but then years later that was replaced with a surround sound stereo. However, the real music that stands out in my memory was from Christmas Eve candle light services hearing the German Baptist choir harmonizing the songs of the season.
Even more precious than the choir music that I have memorialized in my heart occurred around the Advent Wreath during our
"Advent Family Worship" (click HERE to read).
In this series I will feature Christmas songs from each decade over the past 100 years.
We just finished featuring songs from the 50's (click HERE to view 1950's)
Today we continue our musical study with the "1960's."
The Sixties (a.k.a. The Swinging Sixties) was a tumultuous decade with the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, The Cold War picked up steam, Vietnam War continued through this entire decade and constant anti-war protests occurred. The civil rights movement began in the mid 1950's but continued through to the end of the 60's. Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969 and of course the Woodstock Festival also happened in 1969.
Most of the Children's Christmas Classics (cartoons and Claymation) movies were created during this decade: Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964, A Charlie Brown Christmas 1965, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! 1966, The Little Drummer Boy (Claymation) 1968 and Frosty the Snowman 1969.
Since the 60's was the decade that produced many of the cherished children's Christmas television specials I decided to include my favorite scene from "A Charlie Brown Christmas".
