Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing #63

Welcome to the 63rd Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.

I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds" written by John Newton (1725-1807)   & composed by Alexander R. Reinagle (1799-1877).  
John Newton had a difficult childhood.  His mom continuously taught him Bible verses but unfortunately she died when he was only 7 years old.  After a few years of schooling he then joined the navy and went to sea with his father.  He eventually dissented from the navy, was ill-treated by a slave-dealer and he continued down the wrong pathway.  It wasn't until many years later that he returned to the Christian teaching of his youth and started preaching.  It was during this changed portion of his life that he wrote many beautiful hymns.


I have included 2 versions of this wonderful hymn (below the lyrics).  The first version is a congregational song (just like I remember from my childhood), the second is also beautiful - the singer has an amazing voice!  Enjoy!

1. How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear!  It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.

2.   It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast;  'Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary rest.
  

3.  Dear Name! the Rock on which I build, My Shield and Hiding Place, My never failing Treasury, filled With boundless stores of grace;

4.  Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King, My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End, Accept the praise I bring.

 5.  Weak is the effort of my heart, And cold my warmest thought;  But when I see Thee as Thou art, I'll parise Thee as I ought.
