Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #48

Welcome to the 48th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "In Christ There is No East or West" written by John Oxenham (1852-1941) & Composed by Alexander R. Reinagle (1799-1877).
The name "John Oxenham" was actually a pen name for William J. Dunkerly.  William began his career as a business man but later decided that he enjoyed writing better.  It wasn't until he was in his 50s that he began submitting his poems! (It's never too late to do God's Will).

"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all others."  Romans 12:4 & 5

Please enjoy the YouTube videos of todays featured hymn!  The lyrics are just slightly different than the version in my hymnal and the second version was beautifully performed by a high school choir (see below the lyrics)

Turn with me to number 483 in your hymnals and let's sing:

In Christ There Is No East or West
written by John Oxenham (1852-1941) composed by Alexander R. Reinagle(1799-1877)

1. In Christ there is no East or West, In Him no South or North;  But one great fellowship of love Throughout the whole wide earth.
2.   In Him shall true hearts everywhere Their high communion find;  His service is the golden cord Close binding all mankind.
3.   Join hands, then, brothers of the faith, Whate'er your race may be.  Who serves my Father as a son Is surely kin to me.
4.  In Christ, now meet both East and West, In Him meet South and North;  All Christly souls are one in Him Throughout the whole wide earth.

A special thanks to "Dawn Slike" for sharing this with us!
