The Toledo Zoo - Feature #12 & Name That PLANT
The Toledo Zoo in Toledo, Ohio has been voted one of the top 10 Zoos in the country! I have lived in this area for 20 years and this past September 2015 is the first time that I have ever visited this special place. Now I am asking myself: "Why did it take me so long?".
I had the pleasure of visiting the zoo with my sister & brother-in-law and my precious twin nieces. It was such a blessing to experience this amazing zoo with my 10 year old nieces.
Each week I will feature one animal and one plant (asking for your help in identifying some of the plants) - ENJOY!

Feature #12 - STINGRAY
This exhibit was part of the new Aquarium at the Toledo Zoo and one of the most amazing experiences that I had at this zoo! This is an interactive Stingray pool. The Zoo Keepers clipped or removed the stinging part to make it safe to touch these Stingrays. I was astonished at the texture of these fish because they were not at all slimy - it was the softest feeling similar to suede or angora (but without the fur).
The Stingray is a fish related to sharks. There are 8 stingray families and are common in tropical & subtropical waters all around the world. The flatness of this fish is for protection reasons - they are able to rustle up the sand and hide underneath.

I went to the zoo to look at animals but found myself mostly taking pictures of plants.
Many of the plants around the zoo exhibits and buildings I had never seen before (and unfortunately they were not labeled), so I decided to include a section asking for your help. The featured plant today is also my favorite plant that I saw during this visit to the zoo. It has multi-colored berries - just stunning! However, I haven't a single clue about the name of this plant.

I am going to make an attempt at the plant names. There are quite a few in the photo. From the top left, purple, looks like Coleus to me.The green variegated beneath the purple in the bottom left also look like Coleus.
ReplyDeleteThe pretty pink with violet center makes me think of the Cone Flower.
Those are my best guesses. I have no idea what the big leafy one on the right is. Similar to a fig leaf or a bay laurel but I just don't know.
Thank you so much for helping identify these plants! I agree - I think the purple & green look like Coleus. However, I just don't know about the large green plant & the little flower - I just looked under Cone Flower online & nothing seems to resemble this flower but thank you so much for your input!! My search for the answer continues. Have a blessed day!
DeleteIn my opinion, they look like African daisies = white flowers purple center. I love zoos! We have a couple of fun ones near where we live. I love watching kids’s faces when they discover or feel something new or weird! Thank you for sharing!
