I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).
I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.
The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"
Today's featured hymn is "Hallelujah, What a Savior!" written & composed by Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876). Mr. Bliss was quite an amazing person! He was born in Pennsylvania to humble parents. He started out on his own at age 11 (yes - eleven!!) to work at a lumber camp because his father could not afford to send him to school. He attended the local school on days when he was unable to work. At night, after work at the lumber camp, he would study his school books. Music was his passion and by 1857 he became a music teacher himself! A few years after he accepted that teaching position, he traveled by horseback & taught music on the road. On top of his teaching, he was very successful composing & writing lyrics to hymns. Unfortunately, he & his wife died in a tragic train accident in 1876.
I have included 2 different versions of this lovely hymn - the first one is traditional and the second one is a little bit modern. Please take the time to listen to them both & ENJOY!
Turn with me to number 150 in your hymnals and let's sing:
Hallelujah, What a Savior!
written & composed by Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876)
1. "Man of Sorrows," what a name For the Son of God who came Ruined sinners to reclaim! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
2. Bearing shame and scoffing rude. In my place condemned He stood; Sealed my pardon with His blood; Hallelujah! What a Savior!
3. Guilty, vile and helpless, we; Spotless Lamb of God was He; "Full atonement!" can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior!
4. Lifted up was He to die, "It is finished," was His cry; Now in heaven exalted high; Hallelujah! What a Savior!
5. When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring. Then anew this song we'll sing; Hallelujah! What a Savior!
