I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).
I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.
The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"
I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.
Today's featured hymn is "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" written by Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915), & composed by Robert Lowry (1826-1899). There is a fantastic "Prayer Proof" (< click to read more about other prayer stories) story that goes along with this beautiful hymn! The writer Fanny was a "Prayer Warrior" and prayed about everything - she was struggling financially and had a specific amount of money that she needed. A few minutes after praying a man gave her the exact amount that she needed!! She wrote this poem as a result of what happened that day & later it was put to music composed by Robert Lowry. There is a wonderful quote from Fanny Crosby when she was recalling this Prayer Proof story: "I have no way of accounting for this except to believe that God put it into the heart of this good man to bring the money." ReplyDeleteI love the old hymns. My little church also just had a piano and sometimes guitars. We had a small choir, about half was the youth like myself. I spent 3 days a week going to church-twice on Sunday, Tuesday Youth night, and Wednesday prayer meeting. As a teen, as shy as I was, with much encouragement I sang solo as well as with the choir. I would not trade those days for anything. I learned so much about kindness, forgiveness, and love! Without God, I don't know wat I'd do! Thank you so much for sharing! It really touched my heart! God Bless You! Oh, and I go around the house singing all of the old songs.
