Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #25

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Take Time to Be Holy" written by W.D. Longstaff (1822-1894), & composed by George C. Stebbins (1846-1945).  W.D. Longstaff was not a pastor or clergy of any kind - he was an English businessman.  After hearing a sermon on
1 Peter 1:16 "for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.' "
he decided to write a poem.  That poem was published in a Christian newspaper.  The composer George Stebbins saw that poem, cut it out and put it aside.  It wasn't until many years later that George Stebbins stumbled upon that saved poem and then put it to music.

Please take time to  listen to the YouTube video below the lyrics.

Turn with me to number 310 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Take Time to Be Holy
by W.D. Longstaff (1822-1894) & composed by George C. Stebbins(1846-1945)

1. Take time to be holy, Speak oft with thy Lord;  Abide in Him always, And feed on His word.  Make friends of God's children;  Help those who are weak;  Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

2.  Take time to be holy, The world rushes on;  Spend much time in secret With Jesus alone.  By looking to Jesus, Like Him thou shalt be;  Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

3.  Take time to be holy, Let Him be thy Guide, And run not before Him, Whatever betide;  In joy or in sorrow, Still follow thy Lord, And, looking to Jesus, Still trust in His word.

4.  Take time to be holy, Be calm in thy soul;  Each thought and each motive Beneath His control;  Thus led by His Spirit To fountains of love, Thou soon shalt be fitted For service above.

  1. You may not know it but I've been following your blog. Your blog has inspired me since then. It's been a blessing reading and listening to the songs. I like hymnal songs, too! Although the song leaders in our church have been choosing hymnal songs lately in between praise and worship songs. i
