God's Strength Eliminates Fear
What is fear? and in what kinds of situations do we experience fear?
Fear is: terror, dread, panic, horror, worry, concern, anxiety and distress. We might experience any or many of these feelings during both good and bad times.
Let me give you a few examples:
- What if you were starting a new job? Even if it's a desired job there is still fear involved.
- The more obvious example is if you were about to have surgery - of course dread and worry are normal feelings.
- Maybe you are moving to a new town, which is exciting but also concerning and anxiety causing.
Fear is a normal part of life but when we focus on fear - that's when the "dismayed" part comes in. Let's look at Isaiah 41:10 - first God says "do not fear, for I am with you", then God says "do not be dismayed, for I am your God."
"Dismayed" is not a word that is used often in today's society. Here is the meaning of "Dismayed" - to cause to lose courage or resolution, to cause to lose enthusiasm; disillusion (Merriam-Webster & the Free Dictionary)
What is the opposite of fear?
- confidence
- assurance
- belief
- faith
- trust
These are the positive emotions that we will feel when we rely on God and draw from His strength.
How do we draw from God's strength?
- Through constant prayer
- Through meditation on the Bible - God's Word
- Through worship
- Through fellowship
- And finally, by taking that first step of faith

Taking that first step of faith is the most difficult part. Think of it this way - climbing a mountain starts with one step!
