Today is "Good Friday" - let us remember what Jesus did for us & read
Luke 23: 26 - 49
& then sing along with this amazing hymn:
"The Old Rugged Cross" written & composed by George Bennard (1873-1958). I have always loved this hymn & never realized until now that there is a link to Michigan!! (which is where I live). George Bennard received some ridicule during a revival meeting and wrote the first verse as a response to that ridicule & he happened to be in Albion, Michigan. Then, he travelled to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin where he completed writing this wonderful hymn. Guess where he was when he first performed this song? - In Michigan!! (June 7th, 1913 in Pokagan, Michigan)!!
I could not pick just 1 video! Below the lyrics I have included three YouTube Videos of this wonderful hymn. Please take time to listen.
Turn with me to number 146 in your hymnals and let's sing:
The Old Rugged Cross
written & composed by George Bennard, (1873-1958)
1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.
CHORUS
2. Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary.
CHORUS
3. In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died To pardon and sanctify me.
CHORUS
4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I'll share.
CHORUS
Chorus
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, ..........Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to
cross, the old rugged cross,
the old rugged cross, ...........And exchange it some day for a crown.
cross, the old rugged cross,
cross, the old rugged cross,
the old rugged cross, ...........And exchange it some day for a crown.
cross, the old rugged cross,
