Are You Building Your Life on the Rock or the Sand?

"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?  I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.  He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.  When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.  The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and it's destruction was complete."  Luke 6:46-49

Let us take a moment and think about the kind of trust that we all put in our home's foundation.  Whether your house or apartment has a basement or a crawl space as the foundation - the security comes from knowing that the footers are properly anchored into the ground with cement (rock).  Where do we hide when a Tornado Warning is issued? - We find shelter in the basement during a storm.

My parents house is built in an area where the water table is high and the basement requires a "sump pump" to prevent any water from accumulating on the basement floor.  This foundation relies on the sump pump working properly otherwise the basement would become flooded watering down and weakening the foundation walls.

The house that I now live in on the other hand has a lower water table - this house was built in the mid 1960's and originally had a sump pump in the basement.  After a few years the sump pump was removed because that pump never turned on once.  To this day, many decades later the basement is dry without a single fracture in the foundation walls - the foundation is sturdy and steadfast and has withstood the test of time and many storms.
I shared these basement descriptions to compare to the Bible verses that we are studying today.  Putting God's Word into practice is action.  We will only be able to endure tough times and persevere through the storms of life by being deeply secure in the "Rock" - having a deep foundation in God's Word both through meditation on the Bible and through prayer.
Reading God's Word + Prayer = Christ-like Action

The man who built his house on the ground without a foundation and whose house therefore collapsed in the storm is like someone whose Christian walk is swept away with the changing ways of the world.  It is very interesting that in verse 49 this "destruction was complete" - in other words - it is eternal.  However, the Lord God Almighty is "the Rock eternal" and trusting in Him forever will build the kind of foundation that will have blessings forever.

"Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal."  Isaiah 26:4

To withstand life's tough times and the world's deceptive ways - trust the Lord forever by building your life on the "Rock"!!!

I wanted to share an old Sunday School Song from my childhood:  "The Wise Man Built His House"  (I first learned this song from my aunt when I was about 6 years old)

ENJOY!!

  2. I like this that you wrote, "...having a deep foundation in God's Word both through meditation on the Bible and through prayer..." I lay the foundation of rock by consulting with God before I make decisions and an important move. I want everything in my life to be founded or re-founded upon the Rock. Thanks for sharing this encouraging post.

I see you're still going strong, thanks be to God.
