"Monet's Palette Mixture" Sunflower

I was very disappointed with this seed packet  - it was supposed to be a mix of different sunflower varieties.  The only seeds that germinated were the dark, almost black sunflowers (which are very beautiful but not what I expected when I think of "Monet").  It wasn't until the end of the sunflower season that this one little yellow sunflower appeared (as seen in the first picture).  I just wonder what the other flowers would have looked like if they had germinated - gives me something to look forward to next year.
Enjoy the pictures!

All photos were taken by me (Angie Ouellette-Tower) and the sunflowers were all grown in my garden (2012 Sunflower seeds were from Pinetree Garden Seeds).

  1. I have tried, but I can never get things to grow from seed...I think the packets we can get in the stores are too old sometimes.

  2. The dark flowers are very pretty but I can certainly understand your disappointment, a garden of mixed sunflowers would be lovely. I've never seen the variety of sunflowers like the one in your first photo. It has a wonderful, lush fringe of petals at its center, truly a beauty.
I've often wondered if some seed packets might just be old, perhaps left in storage from a previous season and the seeds are no longer viable ? My daughter bought a packet of mixed bedding flowers and all that sprouted were a few periwinkle plants. :(

  8. More yellow would have been pretty, but the dark ones are so intriguing. Are you able to save any seeds or are the birds getting them all?
