German Easter Egg Tree OR "Osterstrauch"
I am half German and the "Osterstrauch" has been an Easter tradition in my family ever since I can remember. The word "Oster" means Easter and the word "Strauch" means bush or branch.
I made these Easter ornaments many years ago from real eggs (I blew out the egg through a pin hole at either end, allowed the inside to dry and then hand painted them). Traditionally we would hang these eggs on pussy willow branches or on branches from an apple tree (if it was in bloom). This year I decided to use branches from our forsythia bush since it is currently in bloom. I do NOT recommend using forsythia branches since the blossoms started falling almost immediately after cutting them.
ENJOY the pictures that I took of my "Osterstrauch"

ReplyDeleteVery nice tradition, my husband is German, but I don't ever remember him telling me about this tradition. I am following you on Networked Blogs :)

This is a wonderful tradition, and thank you so much for sharing! I've seen Lithuanian carved eggs, and these hand-painted eggs are beautiful just like those! My favorite is that purple flower (I'm not good with flower names) one you show a close-up of near the end. Beautiful!

Those are lovely Easter branches!! But yes I can imagine it will be a pain to clean up after all those leaves fall down.

Angie, these eggs are so beautifully painted, I think that is how you should paint your gourds. People will want them! What do you think?
