Basil
Basil is one of those herbs that you either hate or love. Basil has both an anise flavor and a fresh green flavor - I am talking about the traditional culinary sweet basil. There are so many different varieties of Basil: lemon basil, spicy basil, Thai basil, cinnamon basil, lime basil, clove basil.....................
Out of all the varieties that I have tried to grow my favorite is "Genovese Basil" - because of it's taste and ease of harvesting. The large leaves are perfect for making pesto.
I always try to plant Basil two different times throughout the season. In the picture above the smaller plants were planted 3 weeks after the larger plant on the left - that way I am able to harvest Basil multiple times in one summer.
